Elegy written in a Country Churchyard (1751) by Thomas Gray is one of England’s most beloved poems and the stanza below is a memorable part of the poem. You may even recognize a movie title taken from the poem.
"The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,
And all that beauty, all that wealth e’er gave,
Await alike the inevitable hour:
The paths of glory lead but to the grave."
But it is an old poem, almost three hundred years old, and while we haven’t changed, there have been some cultural changes. Some newer references, therefore, may be in order.
"The boast of portfolios, the flaunt of power,
The latest fashions, and all the fake news rage
Await alike the inevitable hour:
The billboards of status lead but to the obit. page."
