The Swamp

"No thing in use by man for power

of ill can equal money."

Socrates is so right. The dominant guiding power in all living things is self-interest, and that guiding influence, so far as humans are concerned, if unchecked, usually leads to some ill, in ourselves and others.  It’s the way of the world. (Unless something like the Sermon On the Mount changes our mind).

A current example of individuals using their money and power for special privilege is taking place in the center of the free world. There persons who have money arrange for the government to provide transportation (sometimes pretty high-class transportation) for public and private responsibilities. Sometimes even millionaires think they ought to have Air Force jetliners take them on their honeymoon. Important people must wiggle and duck, skirt a little law or two, in order to get their due, but unless they have the misfortune to be noticed by some journalist, these important people cheerfully paddle around in the swamp as they serve their country.

But it can be too easy to pass judgement. Many ordinary people—maybe you and me, for instance— would eagerly jump into the swamp if life gave us the opportunity.
