Faith, Hope and Love
May 22, 2022
Contrary to the optimistic views of recent times, that is, up through the end of WW11, the world is not getting better. At least that’s my view. Add up environmental degradation, political disorder, war, the widespread view that moral values are a personal matter—believe whatever you want; there are no absolutes; it’s all up to you (see the Hemmingway quote below), and you will see why I am a little discouraged.
But there is a Biblical optimism, better, there are Biblical optimisms. Many accept one of the Biblical notions that we are in the last times. a fellow resident where I live mentioned ‘The Rapture’ the other day. My Biblical optimism is not based on that kind of view. Rather, l accept ‘The Sermon On The Mount’, that collection of the teachings of Jesus and other teachings of Jesus which tell us that though what is outside of us is pretty gloomy, we can have an inner light. The dark of the world is not necessarily all there is. We can choose Faith, Hope, and Love. It has worked for many. But there is a warning. The word ‘love’ is used so much these days that it means almost anything. In this Thought, it means hoping that others do not suffer.
