Caused or Happened

January 21, 2022

“It happened to be the case.” No, it did not.  Nothing just ‘happens’.  If the word is intended to mean there was no cause, then it is just nonsense because everything must have a cause—except the ‘will’ of God and none of us have any idea what that means.

Our language—I know only English—emerged in Northern Europe four or five centuries after the time of Jesus. It was preceded by Latin, the language of Rome, and naturally carried with it the human inclination to think that things ‘happen’, no cause, just happen, occur. But that is not the case. Nothing ‘happens’; all must be caused. Including the thoughts in your head.

Now that may lead us to consider the difference between brain and mind. Brain is the machinery; mind is a mystery. Maybe one thought leads to another, that is, one thought causes another. But if that is the case, we do not make choices. All is caused. Cause and effect. Cause and effect. Always. Everywhere. Total causation throughout all universes. Except in the mind of God. Of course, we may accept the thought that possibly God put into our minds some of His mind, and if that could be the case, then total causation might not prevail after all.
