I find, as you do, war incomprehensible. How can it possibly be that men and women do their best and try their hardest to destroy other men and women? Blood. Carnage. There are a few who will have no part of it.  Total pacifists. There are more who will only go to war to defend themselves, who believe their government knows best, that war is necessary, else they themselves will be destroyed by another government. And there are always a few who enjoy destroying others.

Down through the years most people have gone to war either to prevent other governments from destroying them, defensive wars, or to bring about a better world by destroying the other government first. 

There are tyrannical governments who will go to war, and use their citizens to destroy others, for arbitrary reasons, but no matter how necessary or how arbitrary, war is a terrible thing.
