Your Treasure
July 11, 2021
This thought, which you have seen before, is from the Sermon on the Mount, that life-saving gathering of some of the words of Jesus. A first thought, often enough, will be of money, gold and silver, but the treasure in this line, I am sure, is much more. Anything that captures our heart and our life is that demonic treasure.
Think of the treasures in this life. Friends, colleagues, family. Children and grandchildren, house and home, a lake home, neighborhood gatherings, hobbies. Season tickets to baseball and football games, opening nights at concerts and plays, new car, social status, knowledge and power, reputation, money, public notice, health, appearance, activities, travel, degrees. All good. All desirable. All wonderful unless
. . . .
. . . . unless they are the whole of your heart, unless they blind you to the needs around you, needs that may be financial, social, emotional. Have your treasures injured or hurt others? Have your treasures captured or enslaved your heart? Do your treasures focus inward or reach outward? Can you use your treasures or do your treasures use you?
Now of course this will all vary in degree. Our job is to vary as much as possible one way rather than the other.
