The Kingdom
March 20, 2021
Thy Kingdom come—on earth. What would that be like? The Kingdom of God on earth? What would be required of us, or offered to us, if we were citizens of that Kingdom? How would we be expected to behave? Same as now? Not likely. Surly we would have to change? But how?
If we were always civil and polite, neatly dressed, active in community affairs, and careful drivers, would that bring the Kingdom closer or bring us closer to the Kingdom? Somehow all of that seems irrelevant.
But what if we were all pacifists, Quakers, lived in communes, shared a common purse—like the early Christians? Would not that be enough? Would not that be the Kingdom on earth? Or is that also not quite there?
It might all look good from above, a drone photo or video, but what of the inside? What of the heart? Or, in secular terms, what of the mind? Could there be a Kingdom or people who worked hard at appearing good? Who stood in front of churches and synagogues in clerical collars or black hats, holding Bibles, volunteered at non-profits, but who inside were proud, vain and egotistical?
None of the above. The place to look for the Kingdom on Earth is on the Mountain or on a Level Place. There we may listen to Jesus, have our sins forgiven, have our demons (some of us have them) cast out, have our bodies healed, and, for that moment, walk in the Kingdom of God.
